The Diocese of Moosonee was erected as the Vicariate Apostolic of James Bay on December 3, 1938.  On July 13, 1967 it was elevated to the Diocese of Moosonee.  Originally comprising the northern part of Ontario and a portion of Quebec, it's territory was redefined on May 31, 2007, and the Quebec Territory was moved to the Diocese of Amos.
